Ashley Drive Upgrade, Canberra ACT

Nathan contracted to BMD to provide concrete FRP works for a 3-span, 2 lane bridge at Wanniassa in Canberra.  The scope of works included full construction of abutments, pile caps, piers, headstocks, placement of Super T’s, approach slabs, deck and barriers.  Nathan also built 2 pedestrian underpasses for a new 2-lane carriageway.

Technical challenges:

  • Formwork designs at headstocks needed to incorporate a Super T support system, since the beams were not seated directly on each headstock Required Stich pour to join each beam.
  • Concrete placement in cold temperatures:  pour starts were delayed until a minimum air temperature of 5 degrees was achieved, usually around 11:00am.  Concrete finishing was prolonged, often until late in the evening.
  • Environmental controls were essential to prevent water discharge into the stormwater channel drains under the bridge, during green cutting of concrete.  The controls included temporary conduit drain lines on the deck level and installation of geofabric under the bridge beams.
